Repairing Concrete in Extreme Environments: Sulforesistant Mortar

What is a sulphur resistant mortar?

A sulphate resistant mortar is a mortar that has sulphate resistant properties, and is formulated with Sulphate Resistant Cement, Type SR. Sulphates are chemical compounds that are present in a wide variety of soils, groundwater, surface water and seawater.

In a sulphate attack on mortar or concrete, there are mainly two chemical reactions: the first is the reaction of sulphate with calcium hydroxide present in the hardened cement forming calcium sulphates (gypsum) and the second is the reaction of calcium aluminate, also known as ettringite.

The result is an increase in the volume of the solid that generates expansions, ruptures and softening of the mortar or concrete.

Structural repair of concrete in extreme environments

For the repair of concrete in outdoor environments it is important to consider the environmental conditions correctly, as well as the pathologies found in the concrete, in order to properly diagnose and select the solution to be applied.

In the case of polluting environments with high sulphate concentrations, the use of sulphur-resistant repair mortars and waterproofing barriers is essential for adequate durability.

Molins’ Sulphur Resistant Mortars

At Molins we have a wide range of repair mortars and waterproofing coatings that are suitable for situations where sulphates are present in soils and water in contact with the structure, for different fields of application.

For example, we have the REPAR TECHNO range of repair mortars and the waterproofing coatings PROPAM IMPE CAPA GRUESA and FLEXITEC, among others.

PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO 40

PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO is a thixotropic, one-component, non-shrink, high-shrink, thixotropic repair mortar with very high mechanical strength and reinforced with fibres, specially formulated for the structural repair of concrete in marine or aggressive environments.

Some of its advantages are that it is sulphate resistant, suitable for interior and exterior use, has a high resistance to carbonation and freeze-thaw cycles and allows the execution of the structural repair with a single product and in a single step.

It is suitable for structural repairs of all types of elements subjected to aggressive environments such as: pillars, beams, joists, slab edges and slabs, made of anti-sulphate cement.

Propam Impe Thick Film

We offer PROPAM IMPE THICK LAYER mortar, in 25 kg bags, which forms a completely waterproof coating with high adherence in thick layer, applicable both under direct pressure and counter-pressure.

Some of the properties are that it is sulphur-resistant, waterproof from 5 mm and water vapour permeable, it is not necessary to wait until the surface is dry to apply it, it minimises algae growth and has excellent waterproofing even under high pressures for and against hydrostatic pressure.

FLEXITEC

Flexitec is a two-component sulforesistant mortar formulated with cements, synthetic resins, additives and selected aggregates. Its function is to form a highly flexible and highly adherent waterproof layer on top of the concrete. At the same time, it has the ability to protect the concrete against the carbonation process and is suitable for contact with drinking water.

PROPAM REPAR TECHNO FLUID

Finally, we have PROPAM® REPAR TECHNO FLUID, a fluid structural repair mortar formulated for use in aggressive environments and resistant to sulphates. It has a high impermeability to water and chlorides and is especially recommended for the structural reinforcement of concrete.

It can be applied by pouring, injecting or pumping, allowing formwork to be stripped after 24 hours. In the case of structural screeds, the recommended working thicknesses are up to 20 cm.
