Molins, Enagás and Linde selected to receive EU Innovation Fund funding for the Mosusol-NetCO₂ project

  • The project aims to capture around one million tonnes of CO₂ per year at our plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), avoiding up to 1.1 million tonnes of emissions annually.
  • The initiative combines advanced capture technologies and CO₂ transport infrastructure, with the potential to support the decarbonisation of other industrial sectors.

The European Union’s Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest grant programmes for low-carbon technologies, has selected the Mosusol-NetCO₂ project, which we are developing in collaboration with Enagás and Linde, to receive funding under its Net-Zero Technologies call (IF25 NZT). The initiative, focused on developing advanced CO₂ capture and transport technologies, will help drive the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries and position Spain as a leader in carbon management innovation.

This selection highlights the project’s innovative nature, technological robustness and potential to deliver large-scale decarbonisation solutions.

An innovative solution to reduce industrial emissions

Mosusol-NetCO₂ involves deploying an industrial-scale CO₂ capture system at our cement plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), with the capacity to capture around one million tonnes annually, including the biogenic fraction. The initiative will capture approximately 97% of the emissions associated with the production of Portland and calcium aluminate clinker, with the potential to avoid up to 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

The project brings together the experience and capabilities of the three companies. As the project promoter, we are leading the development of the capture system at our plant; Enagás will be responsible for the CO₂ transport infrastructure; and Linde will provide the carbon capture technology and the oxygen required for the oxyfuel combustion process through an air separation unit.

Marcos Cela, CEO of Molins, said: “The European Commission’s selection of Mosusol-NetCO₂ marks an important milestone in our decarbonisation strategy. This decision endorses the potential of a project that combines technological innovation and industrial collaboration to address one of the main challenges facing our sector: reducing CO₂ emissions. At Molins, we continue to advance the development of solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and competitive industry, in line with European climate objectives.”

Arturo Gonzalo, CEO of Enagás, said: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ is an example of how innovation and collaboration enable progress towards large-scale decarbonisation solutions. The European Commission’s selection of the project provides a significant boost to the development of a sustainable CO₂ management value chain, in which infrastructure and the development of logistics hubs play a key role.”

Baltasar Palanca, Managing Director of Linde Gas España, said: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ demonstrates how combining technological innovation and collaboration between companies can turn climate objectives into tangible, large-scale projects. At Linde, we are committed to developing solutions that can drive industrial transformation and make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions.”

A further boost to industrial decarbonisation

The European Commission’s selection of the project, with funding subject to the signing of the corresponding Grant Agreement, marks significant progress since we announced our collaboration with Enagás in February 2025 to support the application to the Innovation Fund.

The initiative has once again received the STEP Seal (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform), a European quality label recognising projects aligned with the European Union’s priorities for the development of strategic technologies.
