Can Rovira quarry participates in the GO-Forward European project to advance subsurface knowledge
The quarry in Sant Fost de Campsentelles has hosted a high-resolution drone photogrammetric survey as part of this European initiative. As a result, 3D digital models will be created to improve subsurface characterisation and advance the study of the geothermal potential of fractured crystalline rocks.
Can Rovira quarry has hosted a high-resolution drone photogrammetric survey led by the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC). The survey forms part of the GO-Forward European project, an R&D initiative funded by Horizon Europe.
Its main objective is to improve subsurface knowledge and develop new methodologies for assessing the geothermal potential of fractured crystalline rocks.
The field campaign brought together ICGC technical teams and M.ª Teresa Yubero de Mateo, Dean of the Official Association of Mining and Energy Technical and Graduate Engineers of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. Together, they highlighted the importance of collaboration between research institutions, industry and professional organisations in advancing applied research.
Drone photogrammetry for 3D geological models
During the campaign, a drone-based photogrammetric survey of the quarry faces was carried out. The data collected will be used to generate highly accurate 3D digital models. These models will provide a detailed understanding of the geometry and geological characteristics of the rock mass.
In addition, they will support the validation of new subsurface characterisation methodologies and provide valuable information for the GO-Forward project and future geothermal research.
Advancing geothermal research
This information will help identify areas with geothermal potential in fractured crystalline rocks, one of the project’s main objectives. Furthermore, improved geological characterisation will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that support geothermal energy as a renewable energy source.
