Iron and steel aggregate

A sustainable and extremely hard product with a high specific weight and excellent resistance to wear. It is derived from black iron and steel slag. Waste subjected to a recovery process which is managed and controlled by Molins.

Iron and steel aggregate is a high-quality and sustainable material with an excellent performance.

It bears the CE marking.

Field of application

  • A sub-base for industrial facilities, roads and repairing and conditioning paths, car parks and gardens.
  • Aggregates for concrete: high-density concrete, industrial warehouse flooring, special concretes.
  • Aggregates for asphalt: wearing courses, special heavy-duty asphalts.
  • Mortars.

Benefits

  • It is manufactured at a black steel slag recovery plant located in Zaragoza that was designed and built by Molins. The scrap derived from the selective collection of steel and other metal products is transformed back into fully recycled steel using an electric arc furnace melting process.
  • The electric arc steel-making process generates a waste product known as black slag.
  • The recovery takes place at the recycling plant, involving the magnetic separation of the metallic fraction incorporated into the slag, which goes back into the furnace. The slag is crushed and sorted by size, thus obtaining the Iron and Steel Aggregate.
  • High resistance to freezing or thawing in areas with extreme temperatures.
  • Affinity to bituminous binders; highly suitable for asphalts, wearing courses, etc.
  • High resistance to polishing and crushing. Suitable for heavy-duty wearing courses such as industrial warehouse flooring.
  • High density, pigmentation; suitable for gardens, it provides the dark colour without the risk of it being blown away by the wind.

Application system

  • It requires the same procedure as conventional aggregates, which it can replace.
  • If this aggregate is used to manufacture concrete, its higher density must be taken into account. Should it be pumped, technical advice is required.
  • Circular Economy can provide technical advice.
