Research and development of a new low-CO₂ cement

The overall objective of this project is to conduct in-depth research and development aimed at producing a new cement in which clinker is partially replaced by calcined clay, thereby obtaining a product with lower CO₂ emissions throughout its manufacturing process. Local clays were identified and characterized, their calcination optimized, and their use validated in cements and concretes that meet strength and durability standards.

The project has demonstrated that calcined clays are a viable and sustainable solution that reduces the carbon footprint and represents a step forward toward more efficient construction materials. This progress marks a decisive milestone in our roadmap toward decarbonization and will also help reduce the carbon footprint of our customers.

The project, carried out in Barcelona, Spain from April 2023 to June 2025, involves an investment of €517,178, of which €172,677 were co-funded by the European Union through FEDER funds, with support from the CDTI–Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
