Circularity in Molins, a commitment to the present for a sustainable future

Molins has 8 facilities oriented towards the circular economy in several countries. These production centres give a second life to materials that would otherwise go to landfill and reincorporate them into the production chain. These facilities include the Granulated Rubber Projects (GRP) plant, which manages tyres at the end of their useful life to transform them into energy or other materials, and the alternative raw materials plant (MPA), which recovers non-hazardous waste from construction and demolition.

Alternative raw materials plant

The Molins alternative raw materials plant (MPA), which covers more than 3,250 square metres, was inaugurated in September 2022 following an investment of 1.7 million euros. With the operation of this plant, Molins is able to offer comprehensive waste management services, including storage, collection and transport to the recovery plant, thus ensuring minimal environmental impact throughout the entire management cycle of non-hazardous waste from construction and demolition.

In its first two years, the plant has recovered 140,000 tonnes of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. Instead, this waste has been used to produce new materials.

The MPA facility receives waste in different formats, such as coarse, granular, powder and sludge. Two main treatments are carried out at the plant: crushing and screening, which processes waste from concrete plants to produce CE marked recycled aggregates; and dosing and homogenisation of industrial and construction waste to produce new alternative materials for cement production.

The use of recycled aggregates in the manufacture of concrete presents a major technical challenge, as their characteristics can vary significantly. Molins has completed all the procedures to meet the technical requirements and has obtained the CE marking, issued by APPLUS, which allows the use of coarse recycled aggregates for the manufacture of concrete, mortar and granular layers.

In addition, these aggregates have the Applus+ certification, of a voluntary nature, which certifies that the coarse aggregates comply with the requirements of the Structural Code for the use of concrete, a standard that from November 2021 replaces the EHE-08.
